Inside Zedd's Robes: Making Up Edition

Update 2/29 Sorry but it doesn't look like I can get the Legend of the Weeker up until Friday. Personal stuff came up. I apologize to my faithful readers. I added some more cool interesting stuff below to get you to the weekend. Also I will try to push my roommate to publish more.

Blog News: So it looks like I didn't get caught up completely by the time the new episode came on. Sorry about that. If you follow this blog on Twitter, you will know that I will try to get the Legend of the Weeker about Mirror tomorrow and the one about Denna this weekend.

Upcoming Events: This weekend will be the episode Cursed. TV Guide has the following:

King Gregor persuades Shota the sorcerer to transform him into a vicious beast at sundown each day so he can protect his realm from the D'Harans. But that viciousness takes an unintended---and tragic---turn, leading to a dilemma for Richard.

Sounds pretty good. Glad to see new episodes.

Cool Stuff on the Interwebs: Hulu which has all of the Legend of the Seeker episodes streaming for free has an interview with Craig Horner. It is the usual fluff. My favorite part:

Me and Bridget get along like a house on fire. We're really good. We got close as soon as we got here because like Richard and Kahlen, who are traveling an unknown world together on their own, and that's kind of what we did.

Uhh? Get along like a house on fire? What?

So there is a cool interview on the Torch Online of Rob Tapert. The editor of the Torch Online does a really good job asking deep questions about the show. The most interesting point is that Legend of the Seeker has not officially been picked up by ABC Disney for a second season. Something about most carriers picking it up. The editor seems to think there is about a 98% chance that it will get picked up.

Also if by some chance you don't know what the Legend of the Seeker is or you want to catch up on the season thus far, check out the following video:

Legend of the Weeker: Identity

Synopsis: The episode starts with Richard fighting a D'haran in a tent and getting killed by him. Ends up this is a vision by a woman named Shota. She predicts the death of the Seeker in three days. Meanwhile, a D'haran commander is making a deal with some shopkeeper. He is approached by Kahlan, Zedd and Richard. Turns out he is working both sides and getting money for the resistance.

Kahlan, Richard, and Zedd with the Resistance

The gang wants to find out what the D'harans are doing at the ruins of Kahlabra. The son of the merchant Gryff, who is about to get married has been studying all the Seeker lore. Turns out this is an arranged marriage for influence and wealth. An old woman warns Richard not to go to Kahlabra and it turns out to be Shota in disguise.

The man leading the D'harans is Demmin Nas, a horrible man. Richard comes up with a plan to infiltrate the D'haran base and have Kahlan confess Demmin Nas to get close to Darken Rahl. Richard tells Kahlan and Zedd about the woman's prophecy but they choose to go ahead with the plan. The old woman comes to Gryff and weaves a spell to make Richard look like Gryff.

Richard must get married

Richard must now get married to Gryff's wife at the point of a sword. He is handcuffed to her and excuses himself from the wedding with the groan-inducing "we are going to make children right now" line. The woman didn't want to marry Gryff anyways so they decide to escape to get to Kahlabra. Gryff suggests a distraction to get into the D'haran's camp.

At the campfire Gryff pretending to be Richard tries to kiss Kahlan but she stops him telling him that their love can never be. As Richard and his "wife" try to escape they are accosted by Shota's helper. Richard defeats them and the woman realizes he is the Seeker. She takes him through some caves to get there faster. Richard talks the woman into realizing that Gryff isn't all bad.

Kahlan is all freaked out that fake Richard tried to kiss her. Zedd convinces her to tell him about her powers. In some cosy hiding out in the wagon Kahlan tells fake Richard that if she ever gets "intimate" with a guy she will release her power and it will take him over. Meanwhile Demmin Nas is blowing up some caves. The same caves that Richard and that wife of his are taking a shortcut through.

Richard is captured

Richard and the wife are captured and Richard convinces the D'haran to let him escape or else he will tell Demmin Nas about the bribes. Kahlan and Fake Richard get into the command tent and Kahlan asks him to read something in High D'haran. She realizes he isn't the Seeker, but the trap is already set. Demmin Nas is evacuated into the tent and defeats Gryff but Richard stops him just in time.

A fight breaks out and the good guys kill most of the D'harans but Demmin Nas escapes. Richard forgives Gryff for pretending to be him. Richard reads the document and they find out that Demmin Nas got a Box of Orden. One of three that gives ultimate power to the one who yields all three. Shota approaches the gang and tells that there is a prophecy that the "one in white" will betray Richard. Kahlan is frightened about this.

Kahlan scared

Commentary: I dreaded having to go back to do this episode. Something about magic spells causing mistaken identities makes me uneasy. I think it's a requirement if you do a fantasy show you must have an episode based on a mistaken identity spell. It's awkward for everyone. Of course Kahlan chooses this time to tell Richard her most sacred secret. Awfulness ensues. Oh also he almost dies and everyone learns a valuable lesson: Be yourself!

There is a lot of magic in this episode that is introduced and has an impact on the rest of the season. The Boxes of Orden are an important factor in several other episodes. As is the constant fear that Kahlan has over being with Richard. These important themes are kind of glanced over in this episode. Overall I feel this episode is like an exposition for the remainder of the season.

Exploding mines of Kahlabra

I love how in this show frequently things are exploding for no reason. Why did the mines start exploding at the end of the episode? I understand that they brought a few explosives in but apparently the D'harans prewired some self-destruction in the mines. That seems safe.

The whole Shota thing was just bizarre. Kahlan freaked out when she heard that the prophecy is that she will betray Richard. How does she even know that she is the one the prophecy speaks of? Self-centered much? All this happens immediately after Zedd tells them that Shota is not to be trusted. Of course he also says he had a sexual tryst with Shota. Weird. But if this the effect that random people are going to have on Kahlan, Darken Rahl should just send some people to tell freaky prophecies to the gang.

Richard and Kahlan Romance Index: 4 out of 10. I understand that most of the romantic things that Kahlan said, she said to Gryff who was pretending to be Richard. It was a bit disconcerting that she couldn't see the difference, but you go ahead and tell me that this look is of someone that isn't infatuated:

Kahlan looks forlornly

And if you don't buy that then there is that little look that Kahlan gives to Richard at the end of the episode. You know she wants to tell him everything. It's just gonna be a hard thing to do.

Richard and Kahlan

Hee hee, I wrote "hard thing to do".

Zedd's Creepiness Factor: 6 out of 10.

Creepy Zedd

Nice creepy wagon driving there Zedd. Why exactly did the D'harans let Zedd into their camp? They couldn't at least check what they were putting into the commander's tent? I swear the security lapses in the D'haran empire are maddening. Darken Rahl pretty much stands no chance. Also I love how Zedd says creepy remarks that have remarkable relevance for Richard and Kahlan. Good job.

Notable Quotes:

Zedd: "Of all the magic in the world none is more powerful than love."

Kahlan: "The dome of Aydindril has stood for thousands of years."
Gryff as Richard: "I think the lesson is if you want something to stand, you have to risk letting it fall"

Kahlan: "In a moment of ecstasy it would be unleashed."

Kahlan: "After worrying all this time, I told the wrong person."

Shota: "It is written that the Seeker will be betrayed by the one closest to him. You will be betrayed by the one in white."

Legend of the Weeker: Elixir

Synopsis: The episode starts with Richard slicing up some floating fruit for Zedd. Richard then stumbles to get clean in some scenic waterfalls. Enter Kahlan with the same thought.

Kahlan Bathing

Before she has a chance to admonish him for being pervy, someone steals their horses. The trio heads back to Drundril, a nearby town. The kid sells back the horses for a vial of something. He then uses said vial to seduce some girl who freaks out after making out with him. Richard, Kahlan and Zedd explore the town and look for the kid. Some trashy bartender serves Richard a drink and then he sees the kid by the lake. They convince the kid to lead them to the peddlers. A fight breaks out and Kahlan confesses one of them.

When the men find out that Zedd is a wizard, they run off. A shopkeeper recognizing the Sword of Truth invites them in. In a cave a wizard is told about Zedd in the town. The shopkeeper tells them that magic potions are being sold and pretty much ruining the town. The confessed guy runs up and lets them know where to find the magic peddlers.

Kahlan the Confessor

Richard asks all about Kahlan's power. He runs up to ask her when Zedd won't explain and they are attacked with some magic and knocked out. Zedd is then captured when his magic has little effect. Richard wakes up and is worried that Kahlan is hurt but she's okay. The wizard takes Zedd to a different cave and Richard and Kahlan can't find him. Kahlan explains her power to Richard and he wants to try to use a magic potion to find Zedd.

The shopkeeper runs up and yells that the horse thief boy is in trouble. Zedd catches up with Jeziah, the other wizard. Jeziah shows him an quillion, a crystal that drains wizards of their magic. He has been selling the magic potions to raise a militia against Rahl. Jeziah tries to convince Zedd to join him but Zedd won't do it because it hurts the town. Zedd is then captured by the wizard using a Rada'Han collar that blocks his power. Richard trades in his father's pendant to get some magic to find Zedd.

The kid tells Kahlan that he was trying to do impress a girl. Richard uses the potion to try to find Zedd. Zedd lectures Jeziah on becoming just like Rahl. While Richard and Kahlan are arguing about using magic to find Zedd, that confessed guy attacks him. He knocks Richard out and the magic wears off. Richard remembers the vision and uses some clues to figure out where Zedd is being held.

Richard vs. the invisible man

They find Zedd and attack the gang with the wizard. Jeziah turns invisible. Too bad Richard had that sweet lesson with the invisible fruit. Richard slices Jeziah and the Zedd stops him that with the Rada'Han collar. The confessed guy is killed saving Kahlan. Zedd gets his power back and Richard gets a valuable lesson in using magic responsibly. Kahlan gets back Richard's pendant and they leave the village in a better place. The kid gets his crush a flower. Zedd tells Kahlan that her and Richard can never be.

Commentary: This is a great episode. It has everything that makes this show great. Zedd is creepy yet waxes wise. Kahlan is gorgeous and hounded by her magic. Richard is impetuous but badass when he is needed the most. All the themes of the series are touched upon here. Helping the less fortunate. Forbidden love. Magic and its consequences. Good stuff.

HD Porn

Not only that, but I think this episode they really went all out on the New Zealand visuals. The country where they film this is absolutely gorgeous. Pretty much every single transition shot was some beautiful countryside. I once read an analysis of the bizarre popularity of CSI: Miami. The reviewer defined it as HD-porn, where the show's less-than-stellar content was masked by beautiful visuals that look great in HD. Never one to read a good idea on the internet and not rip it off, I shall now refer to episodes that are heavy on great New Zealand visuals as "HD-Pornoriffic". This will also be a tag. Though I think the content of Legend of the Seeker is already great and is only enhanced by the HD-Pornoriffic visuals.

The show maintains it's heavy reliance on Star Wars mythology. The scene with the floating fruit and the fruit turns invisible. Only thing missing from that was Han Solo making fun of "hokey religions and ancient weapons". The Sword of Truth can also deflect Wizard's Fire. I don't mind because the geek in me loves Star Wars, but I sure hope Lucas is collecting royalties. Of course it's a pretty timeless story so some similarities are bound to arise.

Zedd is a cool guy

A episode like this shows how much is lacking from the later episodes where Zedd is not around. The theme of the ambiguity of morality in using magic is interwoven throughout the plot of the episode. Kahlan has to come to terms with how the Confessor's power affects her life. Zedd must deal with Jeziah using magic to an ultimately good end but having terrible short term effects. Of course, Richard is new to this whole magic thing and has to see when it is okay to use magic and when he needs to rely on himself. Only thing is Richard uses magic on a daily basis considering the Sword of Truth is nothing but magic. Kahlan's argument doesn't hold a lot of water here.

Richard and Kahlan Romance Index: 7 out of 10.

Richard and Kahlan

This episode is pretty focused on the developing feelings between Richard and Kahlan. There is that first awkward interaction when he spots her bathing. He is also pretty worried about her when they are knocked unconscious. At the end when she gets him back his father's pendant, it is almost like she is trying to impress him. That is some sort of grin she has on her. Did anyone else wonder what she did to that trashy bartender to get the pendant back?

Zedd's Creepiness Factor: 5 out of 10.

Zedd being creepy

Zedd eats a lot of food. His yelling at Richard for losing the horses was pretty hilarious. Also, I love how dramatic he gets whenever he uses Wizard's Fire. He also tries to get a rat to gnaw on a man's junk to escape Jeziah. Talk about using any means necessary.

Notable Quotes:

Richard: "Kahlan, about back at the river. I didn't see anything."
Kahlan: "Richard... you should never lie to a confessor"

Richard: "I want to help these people. But my mission is to fight Darken Rahl."
Zedd: "Rahl isn't the only evil in the Midlands."

Kahlan: "People deserve a chance to change. To be better than the world made them."

Richard: "I know you want to protect me because I'm the Seeker."
Kahlan: "It's not just because you're the Seeker. Richard... I..."

Zedd: "I see the way he looks at you and how you are starting to notice him. But you know neither of you can ever act on these feelings."

Inside Zedd's Robes: Skinny Dipping Edition

Upcoming Events: This weekend is another repeat. We get to see Puppeteer, which was the first Legend of the Weeker ever. You can read all about it here: Legend of the Weeker: Puppeteer. The following week we get Mirror. That will be the first of the five final episodes of season one. Fortunately the good folks over at the Legend of the Seeker Official Site have provided us with some promo shots. Looks like sexiness will ensue:

Richard and Kahlan swimming

Sexiness indeed.

Blog News: So apparently I haven't been doing a good job catching up on those Legend of the Weekers from a time before this blog existed. Blame my European travels. I will do my best to get caught up on the three episodes before the 25th when the new episode comes out. From there on out we will have a sprint to the finale.

On a related note, after the season ends I have no idea what to do with the blog until next season. If you have any suggestions leave them in the comments or send me an email at hopehasawarrrior(@)gmail.com.

Roles in Bruce Spence's Career: Here is Bruce Spence in the movie Aquamarine. I think the movie has something to do with mermaids or something. I would imagine Bruce Spence's role is as the creepy old guy that ends up knowing a lot and teaches the teenagers not to judge books by their covers.

Bruce Spence in Aquamarine

His characters name in this epic is Leonard. I would assume that the W stands for Win. Play to win Mr. Spence. Play to win.

Legend of the Weeker: Deception

Synopsis: Richard and Kahlan are going to hide out with an encampment and get some spice soup for Zedd. They come across the encampment which has been killed by some weapon. The two then stumble across a fight between some rebels and D'harans. They help the rebels and confess a D'haran, Carver Dunn.

Richard has a weapon

He tells them that the D'harans have been using these weapons to wipe out villages to inspire terror. They decide to dress Richard up in Carver's armor and send him to infiltrate the fort where the weapons are held. Richard comes to the fort but is quickly apprehended and sentenced to death for desertion.

The captain of the fort spares him when Richard spins some lie about where the rebels are. When the soldiers come back fruitless, he mocks that they aren't good trackers. They take offense and fight him and he beats the crap out of them. The captain is impressed with Richard and takes him somewhere to prove himself.

Richard with the captain

Richard goes with the captain to a town where he is introduced to the captain's family. He begins to see that not all D'harans are horrible. When Richard gets back he finds out that a shipment of weapons is coming. He frees a resistance soldier to escape to the cave where the resistance is hiding. When this soldier gets back he kills the confessed D'haran just because he is a jerk. The resistance captures the weapons.

Kahlan goes to find Richard while the rest of the resistance goes to that loyalist village that the captain's family is from to destroy it with the weapons. People begin to suspect that Richard isn't Dunn but Kahlan shows up and pretends to be his wife. They escape and try to stop the resistance from killing the town. Kahlan kills the leader of this resistance squad and Richard stops the device from going off. The D'harans show up and Richard fights the captain. He ends up letting him go. Richard and Kahlan destroy the weapons and talk about that some D'harans may not be so two dimensional.

Richard and Kahlan burn a fire

Commentary: Definitely not my favorite episode. There was little romance between Richard and Kahlan and no Zedd. However my main problem stems from the fact that the episode didn't really advance the story at all. I understand that this is a TV show and hence must be serialized but I would like to have some connection to the overall story. There really was no progress made. Everything will continue as it was apart from that D'haran captain maybe helping the Seeker.

If you read the article with Craig Parker that I mentioned yesterday you would know that they are trying to present the good and bad on both sides. This definitely happened here. We realized some of the D'harans aren't so bad and some of the resistance aren't so good. Pretty interesting set up.

Richard deflects arrows

Richard got to show off that he is pretty badass. Jumped into a bunch of fights with the D'harans. Fought three men by himself without the Sword of Truth. Also deflected some arrows with that Sword of Truth magic. He is doing pretty well for himself. Though he did get beat up by Darken Rahl last time they met so he was probably out doing some pushups.

Richard and Kahlan Romance Index: 1 out of 10.

Kahlan looking shocked

Well we got to see what these two are going to be like if they ever become a crotchety old couple. The back and forth between them was pretty funny.

Zedd's Creepiness Factor: 0 out of 10. Zedd was nowhere to be seen again. I think the episodes without him are really lacking. He definitely brings a welcome balance to the show.

Notable Quotes:

Captain: "Sorry son. Your clumsy dad didn't mean to scare you like that."

Kahlan: "Do your people want justice or revenge?"

Captain: "Do your duty Seeker. Finish me."
Richard: "Go back to our family."

Kahlan: "Why did you let him go?"
Richard: "Why did you try to protect Carver Dunn."

Inside Zedd's Robes: We're Back Edition

Blog News: Aaand we're back. Sorry about the vacation break but we're up and running again. I will try to watch the latest new episode tonight and get the Legend of the Weeker up tomorrow. We have also found out the titles for the final episodes of the season. You can find them in the Episode Guide.

Cool Stuff on the Interwebs: Guess who did an interview with the Sunday Star Times from New Zealand? Craig Parker. Darken Rahl himself. He has some pretty interesting stuff to say since he is a veteran of fantasy shows from New Zealand. Read up.

Darken Rahl being creepy

Bridget Regan and Craig Horner also did an interview for Fancast News. There is a spoiler about the season finale. Also from what Bridget says it is going to be a doozy:

“We start [filming] next week. And everybody on set – literally all the makeup girls and the crew, everyone was reading the script and flying through the pages and every once in a while someone will look up and go, “Oh my GOD!” and everyone is like, “I know!” So much crazy stuff goes down in the finale.

Lastly there is a pretty cool article in the New Zealand Herald. Basically it talks about what's prettier to look at, Bridget and Craig or the New Zealand scenery. In HD I would be hard pressed to pick a winner.
